"Once and Future Knights"

Films: Beowulf (1999)

Alias: Grendel and his Mother

Type: Mystical

Location: Haunted home

Height/Weight: That of average humans.

Affiliation: Evil

Summary: What myth buff doesn't know the epic of Beowulf? A proud warrior known for killing monsters right up until his mutual demise at the hands of a dragon. Well...this isn't exactly that kind of a story. It's a bit different in many parts. A bit? We meant very.

History: Somewhere in the future, technology is gone, the world has regressed into a medieval state, and magic is returning to the world. Beowulf is the offspring of a woman and a God of Darkness. He hates his monstrous heritage, and spends his days killing monsters to get his mind off of things. But now he's needed. Because king Hrothgar has (unwillingly) slept with a demonic seductress older than sin itself, who has sired the monster Grendel so that she and her son may take back the land that ostensibly belongs to them. Only Beowulf can stop them now.

Notable Kills: Nothing special

Final Fate: While Grendel is run through the stump that used to be his right arm with a silver sword by Beowulf, his mom dies when she's engulfed in flame ignited by her blood.

Powers/Abilities: Grendel's mom can shapeshift.

Weakness: Anything conventional, but mostly fire and silver.

Scariness Factor: 2.5-The only one here who's remotely convincing is the grotesque Grendel, and even then, some wiseacre added CGI effects to the suit to make him look weirder. Not a totally bad decision, but still. Grendel's mom though, horrible 90s haircut aside, is just a horrible CGI mess that tries to be freaky, and barely succeeds.

Trivia: -Beowulf's actor, Christopher Lambert, claims that this film, in spite of producer promises of a 20-30 million dollar budget, only had a bit less than four million to work with.

-There was a shot deleted scene in which Grendel rapes his half-sister, but the director felt that not only was that sick and wrong, but it didn't mesh well with the rest of the narrative.

And a legend interpretation that will baffle all!

At least, Grendel looks worthy enough.
Nice sword...how do you wield it?

With hair like that, no wonder Grendel went insane with his mother.
Over the hills and hopefully far away...

Grendel's mother really is horrifying! She's a mass of terrible 90s CGI!

Darth Vader?
